High school basketball roundup Southside rallies past Alamo Heights
Southside’s Steve Quintero scored 27 points and the Cardinals used a big fourth quarter to rally past Alamo Heights 65-61 on Tuesday in a Class 5A bidistrict contest at the University of the Incarnate Word’s McDermott Center.
Alamo Heights was the defending Region IV-5A champion.
Southside outscored the Mules 23-11 in the final eight minutes, turning a 50-42 deficit into a win. Southside trailed 34-23 at halftime.
Richard Torres added 13 points and Andrew Mendoza chipped in 10 for Southside.
O’Connor 75, Reagan 57: Brendan Wenzel registered 24 points as the Panthers prevailed in a Class 6A bidistrict game.
Brandon Jones had 18 points and Adam Benhayoune racked up 12 for O’Connor.
Brackenridge 69, Southwest 68 (OT): Joshua Guajardo had 23 points and Donyae Suarez chipped in 22 as the Eagles outlasted Southwest in a Class 5A first-round contest.
Alyjah Thompson tallied 11 points for Brackenridge. Nathan Hernandez and Vincent Fraga each scored 23 for Southwest.
Harlan 66, Highlands 54: Elijah Lomas netted 25 points and Jelen Hanspard added 21 as the Hawks prevailed in their first Class 5A playoff game.
Pleasanton 75, Carrizo Springs 56: Santiago Arguijo had 18 points to pace a balanced scoring attack in a Class 4A first-round game.
Kade Loeffler had 17 and Dalton Hobbs contributed 16 for Pleasanton.
Boerne 50, Burnet 41: Luke Whidbee totaled 16 points as the Greyhounds held on for a Class 4A first-round win.
Ben Mackay added 11 points and Hunter Isenhart added 10.
Cole 67, Jarrell 45: Ya’Monie Crawford scored 14 as the Cougars took control early and never let up en route to a Class 3A bidistrict triumph.
Jordyn Arnette and Silas Livingston each had 12 points and Trey Blackmore chipped in 11 for Cole, which led 36-15 at halftime.
Antonian 69, Katy St. John XXIII 44: Juan Reyna scored 26 points as the Apaches rolled to an easy win in a TAPPS 6A second-round game at Recko Gym.
Gavino Ramos added 19 points and Devin Grant chipped in 12 for the Antonian (34-6).
Saint Mary’s Hall 91, Houston St. Pius X 76: The Barons used a big second quarter to break open a close game.
Saint Mary’s Hall led just 18-16 after the first quarter but scored 34 points in the second frame to pull away.
Ben Eugster scored 22 to pace a balanced scoring attack for the Barons. Avery Eugster and Max Terry each poured in 21, and Dane Huggins contributed 18.
In other action, Wagner romped past Austin McCallum 77-60, O’Connor beat Reagan 75-57, Sam Houston dropped Medina Valley 84-61 and Stevens upended District 27-6A champion Johnson 56-39.
