Grilled Cheese Fest to make San Antonio debut

August 27, 2018

A new San Antonio food festival should make it easy to get cheesy.

The first-ever Grilled Cheese Fest will take place Nov. 10 inside St. Paul Square (1174 E. Commerce St.), with a lineup of food vendors who will battle it out for the best gooey sandwich in the city.

“The plan is to go in and kick the cheesiest ass I can,” said chef James Canter, who will participate as Guerrilla Gourmet, his food truck and catering business. Canter has a grilled cheese sandwich called the Barba-Karma that’s been a menu staple of his since the beginning. It features shredded smoked barbacoa with caramelized onion, “pickle de gallo” and a cheese gravy.

“We figured this was one of those foods from our childhood days that everybody continued to love as an adult,” said event organizer Erica Garcia of egCollaborations.

Other vendors scheduled to participate include:

TheGypsyDiner

Benjies Munch

Bexar Kitchens

Toastie Buns

Home Team Hot Dogs

Its Destiny Catering

Backwoods Beats & Eats

More vendors are expected to be added to the lineup. Organizers are hoping for 20. Food vendors will also be selling other food items.

The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets range from $30 for general admission to $60 for VIP. General admission ticketholders will get 10 tickets to sample quartered grilled cheese sandwiches, one beverage ticket for beer or wine and a token to vote for their favorite vendor. VIP ticket holders get 15 grilled cheese tickets, two beverage tickets, a vote token, swag bag, access to private restrooms and 90 minutes of early access (11:30 a.m.) to the event.

Garcia said that 1,000 tickets will be available, with about 300 already sold. She expects a sellout.

For tickets, and more information, go to eventbrite.com or email erica@egcollaborations.com. Kids ages 12 and under are allowed free entry, but are not given grilled cheese sampling tickets.
