Glykos called up for friendly against SKorea
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — PAOK goalkeeper Panagiotis Glykos was called up Friday to play for Greece in next week’s friendly against South Korea.
Greece coach Fernando Santos said he decided to rest first-choice goalkeepers Orestis Karnezis and Michalis Sifakis as he weighs his options for the lineup he will take to Brazil.
Greece will face Japan, Colombia and Ivory Coast at the World Cup, but first will take on South Korea on Wednesday in Piraeus.
Greece remains one of Europe’s toughest teams to beat, with Santos losing only four of 41 matches. He was still missing defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who recently returned for Schalke following a knee operation.
On Thursday, the Greek Football Association announced that Santos will step down after the World Cup.
“Professionally it was not a difficult decision, but emotionally it was very difficult,” the 59-year-old Portuguese coach said. “I just want to think about the World Cup and have no idea what I’ll do after that.”
