November 15, 1997

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Rod Richardson ran 56 yards for a touchdown and set up another score with a long kickoff return to lead Army over North Texas 25-14 on Saturday.

Eric Olsen added four field goals, while Kenny Dale Rowland recovered two North Texas turnovers to lead an Army defense that limited the Mean Green to 259 yards in total offense, 20 in the first half.

Richardson, meanwhile, ignited the Black Knight offense in the second half, darting untouched on a run down the right sideline for his first career rushing touchdown. The TD gave Army (4-5) a 19-7 lead, swinging momentum back in Army’s favor after a North Texas score the previous drive.

The Mean Green struggled at the onset. LaDarrin McShane, making his first career start fumbled on the first two snaps of the game, losing the second one to Army’s Nathan Smith at the North Texas 45-yard line.

Army’s running game then went to work, capping a 6-play drive with Joe Hewitt’s one-yard touchdown run to give the Black Knights a 7-0 lead. A 28-yard field goal by Olsen gave Army a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Richardson opened the second half with a spectacular kickoff return, maneuvering through the North Texas coverage 64 yards to the Mean Green 26-yard line. That set up a 37-yard Olsen field goal to give Army a 13-point lead.

North Texas (3-7) finally got on the scoreboard on their next drive behind the running of Ja’Quay Wilburn, who rushed 15 yards into the end zone to cut the Army lead to 13-7. Wilburn led North Texas with 44 yards rushing.

After Richardson’s run, Hut Allred scored North Texas’ final touchdown of the game on a two-yard run.

Ty Amey led Army with 71 rushing yards, while Joe Hewitt added 45.
