Students react to scathing report on Providence schools

July 2, 2019

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence public school students are expressing frustration with the condition of their school system after a report found severe dysfunction.

The Providence Journal reports current students and recent graduates at a forum Monday talked about mold and mice in classrooms, low expectations for minority students and a lack of quality teachers.

The forum is among a series of public events in response to a report on Providence public schools by the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy.

The report found rampant conflict among students, crumbling facilities and a tangled bureaucracy with no clear lines of authority.

Aleita Cook, a member of the Providence Student Union, says she’s surprised the district needed someone from the outside to “tell us what we’ve known for a very long time.”
