STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — The police chief in a Mississippi college town was suspended after hitting his brother.

Local news outlets report a Saturday incident report shows police responded after Frank Nichols hit Craig Nichols at a city park.

The report shows the altercation came after the brothers argued over whether Craig Nichols was too drunk to drive home. Craig Nichols refused to ride home with Frank Nichols' son.

Craig Nichols tells officers that his brother came up behind him and struck him in the face. Frank Nichols says he hit his brother when Craig Nichols approached him "aggressively."

The son and two other witnesses support Frank Nichols' version of events.

Aldermen suspended Frank Nichols for two weeks and put him on six months' probation.

Nichols was named Starkville's chief in February 2014.
