AMERICA CALLS OFF THOUSAND OAKS CONCERT; AUBRIE SELLERS SAYS SHE CALLED OFF NIGHT OUT BEFORE TRAGEDY

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — The band America postponed their show last night in Thousand Oaks, California, out of respect for victims of Wednesday’s mass shooting at a nearby bar. America says in a statement they are shocked by the news of the shooting and they send their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of those killed or injured. Authorities say 28-year-old former Marine combat veteran Ian David Long opened fire at a country music bar during college night, killing 12 people before apparently killing himself. Country singer Aubrie Sellers, the daughter of Lee Ann Womack, tweets she was supposed to go line dancing at that bar Wednesday but canceled because her cat’s eye was swollen shut.

GILES MARTIN SAYS THE BEATLES’ “WHITE ALBUM” SESSIONS WERE “WARM”

NEW YORK (AP) — The new boxed set of The Beatles’ “White Album” busts one of the myths about them: they actually were getting along pretty good then. Music producer Giles (JY’-ulz) Martin describes the sessions as “warm.” He says the album has a reputation as “this disparate, angry record.” He says while there are elements of that, the four Beatles made exactly the album they intended. Martin says another surprise is how much music they had that they didn’t use. He says they recorded “Across the Universe,” ″Lady Madonna,” ″Hey Jude,” ″Hey Bulldog” and “Let It Be,” which did not appear on that album. Just to show you how exhaustive the project was, Martin says he went through 107 takes of “Sexy Sadie” and even things as mundane as George Harrison’s lunch order. The “White Album” boxed set is out today.

FRANCIS LAI DIES

PARIS (AP) — Nationwide tributes are being held in France in memory of composer Francis Lai (LAY), who died Wednesday at the age of 86. Lai won an Oscar for the soundtrack to “Love Story.” The theme song was a hit as an instrumental track, and Andy Williams had a hit with a lyrical version called “Where Do I Begin?” Lai also wrote the song “A Man and a Woman” for the 1966 film of the same name.

5 SECONDS OF SUMMER EXPLAIN THEIR DELUSION

LOS ANGELES (AP) — 5 Seconds Of Summer admit they’re full of delusion but it’s served them well. Guitarist Michael Clifford says they would play for 20 people in Sydney and tell themselves they were going to be the biggest band in the world. Clifford says with that mindset, they were unstoppable. Singer Luke Hemmings says they were so young when they made their first album and the kind of songs they write has changed. He says their fans are about their age, so they have similar tastes.

KENNY CHESNEY: JUDGING THE ENERGY OF A STADIUM

UNDATED (AP) — If Kenny Chesney is doing his job right as a live performer, the members of the audience won’t wake up until 2 the next day. Chesney says his goal is to “wring every speck of energy out of the fans.” He acknowledges he can feel “a slight ebb during the last song” after a three-hour show. However, he says it’s more likely that the energy feeds itself and he and his audience reach a plateau. While Chesney routinely fills stadiums, his 2019 tour will be in smaller markets and with a stripped-down set. Cities have been announced but not specific dates.

ARTISTS PAY TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Diana Krall says Joni Mitchell is underappreciated as a piano player, while Emmylou Harris says the complexity of Mitchell’s songs cannot be understated. Krall and Harris were part of a 75th birthday celebration in Los Angeles on Wednesday for Mitchell, who has been out of the public eye since an aneurysm in 2015. Krall says while a lot of fuss is made over Mitchell’s open tuning on guitar, Mitchell’s piano playing is “very challenging and interesting.” Harris says she’s been talking with other professional musicians about how hard it is to do some of Mitchell’s songs. James Taylor, meanwhile, says Mitchell is doing much better and is getting back to her instruments. The celebration was taped for a PBS special that will air next year. Others who performed include Chaka Khan, Kris Kristofferson, Rufus Wainwright and Seal.
