Rangers Send Benes to Farm League
BALTIMORE (AP) _ The Texas Rangers assigned pitcher Alan Benes to Triple-A Oklahoma on Thursday and recalled right-hander Reynaldo Garcia.
Benes, acquired from the Chicago Cubs on May 9, was 0-3 with an 11.40 ERA in four starts with Texas. In his last start, against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, he allowed four runs in 3 1-3 innings.
``He hasn’t been able to finish off a lot of hitters,″ Texas manager Buck Showalter said. ``We’ll see what the next few days bring. He needs better control of his fastball.″
Benes said he never got comfortable pitching with the Rangers.
``It’s hard to relax. It’s hard to go out there and let things happen,″ he said. ``I’m not the first guy who’s been in that situation. It’s just been one of those things _ ground balls through the holes, and when I needed to make a big pitch, I didn’t make it. It’s definitely frustrating when you’re in a situation like I’m in.″
Garcia went 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA in nine games with Oklahoma, including three starts. He compiled an 0.59 ERA as a reliever and was 0-1 with a 10-.32 ERA in his three starts.
Still, the Rangers are considering using him as a starter or in long relief.
``We think he’s a guy who’s ready to go for an extended outing,″ Showalter said.
Garcia began the season with the Rangers but was sent to Oklahoma on April 13 after five appearances in which he had a 7.37 ERA.
The Rangers also announced Thursday that infielder Jeff Pickler and Paul Ottavinia have cleared waivers and were sent outright to the minors. Pickler was assigned to Oklahoma and Ottavinia was assigned to Frisco of the Texas League.
