Arsenal Moves Into Second Place
LONDON (AP) _ Despite playing a man short for two-thirds of the game, Arsenal won 2-1 at Liverpool on Sunday to move into second place in the Premier League behind Newcastle.
In the only other game, Chelsea overwhelmed Bolton 5-1 to pull within six points of first place in the tightest race in a decade in England’s top league.
Newcastle has 36 points followed by Arsenal and Liverpool with 33, Leeds with 32 and Manchester United and Chelsea with 30.
Playing a man short after the 36th minute when Giovanni van Bronckhorst received his second yellow card, Arsenal took the lead in first-half injury time when Thierry Henry converted a penalty kick.
Freddie Ljungberg made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute when he sent a cross from six yards past Liverpool goalie Jerzy Dudek. Liverpool scored in the 55th minute on Jari Litmanen’s header.
At Chelsea, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Boudewijn Zenden and Frank Lampard scored for Chelsea. Chelsea’s other score came on an own-goal by Bolton’s Colin Hendry.
On Saturday, Newcastle rallied in the final minutes for a 4-3 victory at Leeds. Defending champion Manchester United, behind three goals from Ruud Van Nistelrooy, downed Southampton 6-1.
