CHILLY: “Stay Cool,” First Friday is presented by Kool Hits 105.7 from 5 p.m. to midnight Friday, Aug. 3, in downtown Ashland. The event features live music performed by Outrider and 3rd Rock in the intersection of 15th Street and Winchester Avenue facing the First Friday Beer Garden. The downtown concert is free and open to the public. Music begins at 7 p.m. First Friday music is sponsored by Town Square Bank. Children’s activities and more are also featured.
MUSICAL: Paramount Players presents “Legally Blonde the Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Aug. 3-4, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at Paramount Arts Center, Ashland. Tickets are $25; $18 students.
100TH: James Dyer Standard became one of Putnam County’s oldest residents and veterans in July and honored with a birthday celebration by his family at John Henson Senior Center. Here’s hoping his 100th birthday was a great one and will be followed by many more.
GOSPEL: Squire Parsons, former teacher in Mason County, WV, sings the gospel in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at First Baptist Church, Proctorville, Ohio.
PASSED: Nearly a dozen in the Health Sciences Academy at Cabell Midland High School recently passed the certified patient care technicians exam and are now nationally recognized as Certified Patient Care Technicians. The following seniors can apply anywhere in U.S. to begin working in the health care field: Joshua Boling, Destanee Carter, Ashley Childers, Hannah Clark, Faith Craddock, Jake Elliott, Alex Houck, Olivia Johnson, Savannah Marcum, Gracie Martin and Logan Ward. Congratulations to these 11 for this accomplishment.
NOODLES: Oodles of noodles are served during the spaghetti luncheon fundraiser sponsored by Cabell/Wayne Medical Reserve Corps from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Tri-State Fire Academy building, 4200 Ohio River Road. A vendor sale is also available. The menu includes spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert for $8 and $4 ages 12 and younger.
DEGREE: Catherine Dennison of Huntington was among more than 3,900 students from Miami University who received degrees during spring commencement exercises in mid-May. She graduated magna with a BA degree, majoring in Integrated Eng Lang Arts Edu. Thumbs up, Catherine, for a job well done.
GARDEN: “Controlling Pests in the Garden” with Chuck Talbott, WVU Extension agent, is the topic for this week’s Putnam Summer Gardening Series from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Putnam County Library, Hurricane. Call 304-586-0217.
