Opening arguments made in murder trial over 1980 slaying

August 28, 2018

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A prosecutor says a Gary man charged with murder in the fatal 1980 shooting of an off-duty police officer confessed to driving the getaway car.

Deputy Lake County Prosecutor Peter Villarreal said Tuesday in his opening argument in James Hill’s trial that the defendant waited outside in the car while two accomplices went inside a Holiday Inn in Hammond, demanded money from a clerk and shot Hammond Officer Lawrence Pucalik while he worked a security job on Nov. 14, 1980.

The Post-Tribune reports the 55-year-old Hill’s attorney, Scott King, told the jury his client is on trial now, 38 years later, because he is suing the city of Hammond and an investigator in Pucalik’s slaying in an unrelated case.
