JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Players at an annual city league-style basketball tournament in Alaska’s capital city had a chance to get something new this year: special mouth guards.

Drs. Rochell Burke and Jordan White put together a program that supplied free mouth guards to any players in this year’s Gold Medal basketball tournament who wanted them.

The Juneau Empire reports as part of their residencies, Burke and White were required to do a service project. After working in southeast Alaska and hearing about the tournament, they wanted to get involved.

Burke says only a few dozen players signed up in advance for mouth guards. She and White found it more difficult to spread word of the program through the villages that send some of the teams.

The two hope to see the program continue.
