College Student Impaled in Fall

September 1, 2000

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ An 18-year-old college freshman was injured Friday when the screen she was leaning on gave way and she fell out a second-story window and was impaled on a spiked security fence.

The student, whose identity was not released, underwent surgery and was in fair condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

The accident happened shortly before 1 a.m. at an off-campus housing facility for University of Southern California students, said Lt. Art Blair of the campus police department. She had arrived on campus days earlier to begin her freshman year.

``She was leaning against a window with a screen in it,″ Blair said. ``The screen popped out and she did a back flip.″

The woman landed on the fence and two spikes punctured her buttocks, Blair said.

Firefighters cut through the fence to free the woman and she was transported to a hospital, with the metal spikes still puncturing her. Police said they did not believe that either alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
