Freeman flies past HTRS in subdistrict semis
The Freeman Falcons had little trouble getting past their first round opponent of the C2-1 Subdistrict Tournament Tuesday night.
The top-seeded Falcons handled fourth-seeded Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer 51-23 at Beatrice High School.
With the win, Freeman advances to play in the subdistrict final Thursday night against the winner of Tuesday’s late game between second-seeded Southern and third-seeded Palmyra.
For results of the Southern/Palmyra game, see Thursday’s Daily Sun.
The winner of the four team subdistrict will automatically advance to a field of 16 teams that consists of the eight subdistrict winners along with the next best remaining eight teams that didn’t win a subdistrict.
Those teams will be seeded and play in a district championship game with those winners advancing to state.
Freeman sits at No. 2 in the Class C2 power rankings, so they will advance to a district final game even with a loss on Thursday.
HTRS hung tough with Freeman in the first quarter and trailed just 8-4 before Trey Yates finished the quarter with a three pointer to make it 11-4.
The Titans Nicolas Knudson opened the second quarter with a three pointer to make it 11-7, but it was all Freeman after that.
The Falcons scored the next 10 points, six of which came from junior post player Brady Ideus while the other four came from Logan Anderson.
HTRS’ Caleb Tackett ended the run with a basket, but two free throws by Anderson made it 22-9 at half time.
Freeman picked up where they left off in the second half. A basket by Anderson sandwiched between two baskets by Ideus made it 28-9. Two more free throws by Ideus made it 30-9.
HTRS’ Connor Bredemeier ended the run with a three pointer, but Freeman went on another 10-0 run. Trey Yates sparked the run with a put back basket followed by a three pointer.
Ideus then scored in the post before another Yates three pointer to make it 40-12. Freeman led 40-14 after three quarters, allowing them to coast to the 51-23 win in the fourth.
Ideus led the way for Freeman with 18 points while Yates had 16, Anderson had eight, Gabe Eisenbarth had three, Holden Ruse and Brock Robinson had two each and Wyatt Currie had one.
Knudson and Bredemeier had six points each for HTRS while Caleb Tackett had five, Gage Schaardt and Cody Hzen had two each and Isaiah Lockard and Hunter Hain had one each.
Freeman improves their record to 19-4 on the season. HTRS’ season comes to an end after posting a 12-11 season.
