ABC Wins the Ratings Week, NBC Series Show Strength With AM-Nielsens-List
NEW YORK (AP) _ The premiere of ″seaQuest DSV,″ NBC’s submarine science fiction series, was last week’s highest rated new show, second only to ABC’s powerhouse ″Monday Night Football.″
″SeaQuest DSV″ was the only new show to make the Top 10 in Tuesday’s Nielsen ratings, but ABC’s single-mom sitcom ″Thea″ reached 11th and NBC’s ″John Larroquette Show,″ playing twice, finished 15th and 19th for the week of Sept. 6-12.
ABC’s National Football League matchup of the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins led with a 20.7 rating and a 36 audience share; ABC had six of the Top 10 shows and won the week with a 10.6 average rating and a 19 share.
NBC was second in household ratings, with a 10.3 rating, 18 share; CBS was third with a 9.2, 16; and Fox Broadcasting Co., which programs only 16 of the 22 hours of prime time, earned a 7.5 rating, 13 share.
One ratings points equals 942,000 homes, or 1 percent of the 94.2 million TV households in the United States; a share is the percentage of TV sets in use that are tuned to a show in its time period.
No. 2 ″seaQuest DSV″ knocked off its Sunday night competition, the one- hour 45-minute premiere of ″Lois & Clark,″ the new Superman adventures, which finished 21st for the week. NBC’s single-dad sitcom, ″Second Half,″ was 24th.
Fox’s ″X-Files″ premiered at 57th and its ″Townsend Television″ variety show was 89th.
In the nightly news sweepstakes, ″ABC World News Tonight″ won its 54th consecutive week, with a 9.4 rating, 20 share; ″NBC Nightly News″ had a 7.9 rating, 17 share, barely ahead of ″CBS Evening News″ at 7.8, 17.
