Mom, infant son killed in Houston crash; woman charged
HOUSTON (AP) — A 20-year-old Galveston County woman has been charged with two counts of intoxicated manslaughter after authorities say her speeding SUV slammed into a car on an Interstate 45 service road, killing a Houston woman and her 3-month-old child.
A $30,000 bond has been set for Veronica Rivas of Bacliff. Police say she appeared to be drunk.
The victims of the Wednesday crash in southeast Houston are identified as 36-year-old Shayla Joseph and her infant son, Braylan. Both were dead at the scene. Police say the infant was in a car seat.
Shayla Joseph was on maternity leave from her job at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
Records show Rivas is set for a court appearance Friday. The court file does not list an attorney for her.
