American Named Director of Ukraine’s National Orchestra
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) _ An American conductor of Ukrainian descent was appointed artistic director of the Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday.
Theodor Kuchar, who is from Cleveland, was the orchestra’s guest conductor in 1993.
Kuchar, 35, began conducting in 1987 when he became music director of the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and was trained as a violinist and violist.
He said he plans to expand the symphony’s repertoire.
``Last Saturday I conducted the Brahms First Symphony,″ he said. ``Fifty percent of the musicians playing were playing it for the first time.″
He is the second American to direct a Ukrainian orchestra, joining Hobart Earle, who conducts the Odessa Philharmonic.
Kuchar also wants to focus on less well-known Ukrainian composers.
