NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) _ The recently retired director of the island's only prison was killed Sunday when a bomb exploded in his car, police reported.

A police spokesman said the bomb went off when Costas Christou, 62, tried to start the car, parked outside his suburban Nicosia home.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and police declined to say if they knew of any motive.

Christou also was the head of the Cyprus Boy Scout movement.
