DeKalb apartment complex fire sends resident to hospital, displaces another

February 2, 2019

DeKALB – A fire on the seventh floor of Golden Years Plaza on East Taylor Street on Friday morning sent a resident to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department.

The fire started just before 11 a.m., and it took firefighters an hour and 20 minutes to get it under control, the release says. Firefighters found smoke and fire in the apartment upon arrival, and the seventh floor and other parts of the building had to be evacuated, the release says.

Two residents were treated at the scene, and the one who didn’t end up in the hospital was displaced because of the severity of the damage. The DeKalb County Housing Authority helped that resident find a temporary living arrangement, according to DeKalb Fire Chief Jeff McMaster.

The estimated cost of the damage is still being determined. The cause of the fire is also under investigation.

The Sycamore, Cortland, Genoa-Kingston, Hinckley, Malta, Maple Park, Rochelle and Shabbona fire departments and DeKalb police assisted.
