Bail set at $10K for police officer in child rape case
DARTMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — A judge has set bail at $10,000 for a town of Dartmouth police officer who faces child rape charges.
Shawn Souza was arrested last week and pleaded not guilty to rape charges involving one child and indecent assault and battery on a second child.
The Standard-Times reports a dangerousness hearing was held for Souza in New Bedford District Court on Monday. Prosecutors asked that he be held without bail for four months, but Judge Robert Ovoian agreed to release Souza on $10,000 bail.
He was ordered to wear a GPS device and stay away from the alleged victims.
Souza’s lawyer has said his client denies the allegations and that the charges date back more than a decade.
Souza was placed on paid administrative leave by the police department.
