Oklahoma City Wins NAIA Title
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Oklahoma City University claimed its first NAIA national tennis title Friday, clinching it with two singles wins.
Paulo Escalona’s victory in a long match with Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Wie-Yu Su and Alfonso Honrado’s upset of top-seeded Ricardo Mena of Flagler helped put the Chiefs out of range with 29 team points.
Su, the seventh seed, led 3-2 in the third set, but Escalona, the No. 6 seed, won the next four games with exceptional passing shots and went on to a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3 victory.
Honrado beat previously undefeated Mena 6-3, 6-2.
Escalona and Honrado will meet Saturday for the singles title.
In doubles, Su and Toshi Matsui will face Honrado and Andreas Lundgren for the championship.
