Worker Killed by Elephant at Safari Park

November 13, 1989

ROCKTON, Ontario (AP) _ A worker trying to stop a fight between two bull elephants at a safari park was crushed to death by one of the animals, police said.

Omar Norton, an employee of African Lion Safari park, apparently turned his back on the animals Sunday, thinking the battle was over, said Staff Sgt. Gary Clue of the Hamilton-Wentworth regional police. One of the elephants then knocked Norton to the ground and crushed him, he said.

Norton, 21, was taken to Cambridge Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Since the summer he had worked as a part-time elephant handler at the popular attraction.

The African Lion Safari has seven elephants.
