Detroit sorority holding event to teach youth water safety

DETROIT (AP) — A free event designed to teach youth about water safety and prevent accidental drownings is scheduled at the Wayne County Family Aquatic Center in Detroit.

Organizers say more than 1,000 children and teens are expected to attend Swim 1922 which will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

As part of the event, a mini swim clinic will be taught by Olympic silver medalist Maritza McClendon.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.

The Rho Sigma Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is partnering with USA Swimming and the Rho Sigma Foundation on Swim 1922.
