Government Cuts Telephones To Former Secret Police Members
TIRANA, Albania (AP) _ The government is cutting telephone lines to members of the former Sigurimi, or dreaded secret police, to help ease a phone shortage.
There are only 17,000 registered telephones in Albania for a population of more than 3 million.
Hasan Bekteshi, the director of the Albanian post and communications agency, said Tuesday that the National Information Services - the Sigurimi successor - had given him a list of 222 phone numbers that should be disconnected.
Eighty-seven of the numbers already have been given to other people. The main beneficiaries were the Ministry of Public Order, the former Interior Ministry under Communist rule.
