Shirley Ann Johnston
Shirley Ann (Perry) Johnston, age 88, went to Heaven’s Garden on Monday, July 2. She died of a blood cancer, in her room at the P.E.O Home in Beatrice. She had resided there for almost three years.
Shirley was born in Alta, Iowa. Her family moved to a farm west of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, when she was 10. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Shirley graduated from Iowa State in 1954 with degrees in Dietetics and Institutional Management. She became a Registered Dietician. She worked in hospitals in Clarinda, Des Moines, Waterloo, Iowa. Shirley then spent 24 years at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings as Dietician and then Head of Food Service. After retiring in 1993, she spent six years as a Housemother at Babcock Hall on the Hastings College Campus.
She loved flower gardening and spent hours working in her yard and then the P.E.O. Home yard, when she moved there. She also enjoyed traveling, spending many winters in Florida and visiting more than 40 countries. She was passionate about volunteering.
She is survived by her children, Denise Rauterkus (North Platte), Daphne Anderson and Darin Johnston both of Lincoln. Also surviving her, a granddaughter, Sara Rauterkus (Omaha), Matthew Rauterkus (North Platte), great granddaughters Elizabeth Boll and Krystal Rauterkus and a great great grandson, Taylor Boll all of Omaha.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 14. A Memorial Service for staff and residents will be held at the P.E.O. Home, Beatrice, Wednesday, July 18, at 2 p.m.
