15 Nicaragua Cops Arrested, Fired
MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) _ Fifteen national police officers arrested on corruption charges are being fired from their jobs, a senior police commander said Thursday.
The 15 face criminal trials on allegations that include theft and robbery, said Eva Sacasa, the National Police inspector general.
``There is an increasing number of complaints by people, and this allows us to investigate and correct abuses and crimes committed,″ Sacasa said at a news conference.
Sacasa said the most recent case was that of Francisco Javier Paniagua Vargas, a member of the anti-riot squad, who was allegedly caught with three civilian accomplices robbing an electrical equipment store.
Paniagua was arrested and turned over to a criminal court on Thursday.
