Patriot David Meggett Arrested
TORONTO (AP) _ New England Patriots running back Dave Meggett and another pro football player were arrested today and charged with sexually assaulting a woman at a downtown Toronto hotel.
Meggett also was charged with robbery, said Sgt. Marilyn McCann.
Meggett and Steve Brannon, a player with the Barcelona Dragons of the World League and a former Patriots’ practice-squad player, were arrested after a 33-year-old woman complained she was assaulted at the Royal York Hotel around 1 a.m. Friday.
The woman was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released, McCann said.
The woman, who is from Toronto, told police she met a man she had known for some time late Thursday night at a suite in the Royal York, a posh downtown hotel.
Police said a second man then entered the suite and the assault and robbery allegedly took place.
Both Meggett, 31, and Brannon, 29, were being held in jail pending a bail hearing later Friday.
McCann said the players wouldn’t say why they were in Toronto.
Meggett has spent nine years in the NFL, the first six with the New York Giants, the last three with New England. He was chosen for the Pro Bowl twice as a kick returner.
