FREDERICTON, New Brunswick (AP) _ Richard Persson scored two unassisted goals as the Albany River Rats beat the Fredericton Canadiens 4-1 on Tuesday night to take a 3-0 lead in the AHL’s best-of-7 Calder Cup final.

Steve Brule and Matt Ruchty added goals for the River Rats, who outshot the Canadiens 37-32. Robert Guillet scored for Fredericton.

Game 4 is Friday night in Fredericton.


KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) _ Grant Marshall scored at 9:43 of overtime as the Kalamazoo Wings beat the Kansas City Blades 2-1 on Tuesday night to force a seventh game in the IHL’s Eastern Conference final.

Manny Fernandez made 31 saves and Mark Pederson added a goal for the Wings, who are trying to become the first team in league history to rally from a 3-0 series deficit. Ken Hodge scored for the Blades.

Game 7 is tonight in Kalamazoo, with the winner advancing to the Turner Cup final against Western Conference champion Denver.


ATLANTA (AP) _ Francisco Cabrera, the Game 7 hero of Atlanta’s 1992 NL championship series victory over Pittsburgh, was released Tuesday by the Braves’ Richmond affiliate in the International League.

Cabrera, who signed a minor league conract with the Braves on Jan. 20, hit .231 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 36 games. He hit .237 with 11 homers and 46 RBIs for the Orix Blues Waves last season in the Japanese Pacific League.


OWASSO, Okla. (AP) _ Matthew Russell of Berry (Ga.) and Jason Sanker of Belmont Abbey (N.C.) shot 4-under-par 68s on Tuesday to share the first-round lead in the NAIA golf championship.

Jamie Drysdale of Texas Wesleyan and Michael Barrett of Glenville State (W.Va.) opened with 69s on the Bailey Golf Ranch course. Berry led the team competition with a 290 total, followed by Belmont Abbey at 292 and Texas Wesleyan and Huntingdon (Ala.) at 293.
