Maine man to serve 10 years for West Gardiner killing
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine man is going to prison for 10 years for shooting and killing another man outside his West Gardiner house in 2017.
Derrick Dupont pleaded guilty to manslaughter under an agreement in which a murder charge was dismissed. He was sentenced Monday in Kennebec County Superior Court. His attorney, Pamela Ames, said the judge imposed a 15-year sentence, but suspended a portion of it.
James Haskell was fatally shot outside Dupont’s home on June 17, 2017. Police say Haskell was trespassing and threating the home’s occupants before he was shot multiple times.
The judge said Monday that shooting Haskell multiple times and then firing a final shot into his head was not a reasonable use of deadly force for Dupont to defend himself and his property.
