Truck Plunges Into Pond, Boy Dies
UPPER FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) _ A 9-year-old boy died Sunday after his parents’ truck plunged into a pond at a state wildlife area, authorities said.
A state police helicopter found the 1987 Ford Bronco submerged in 8 to 10 feet of water at 12:35 p.m., less than an hour after the boy’s parents flagged down a state trooper to report that they couldn’t find their son and their truck was missing, Sgt. John Hagerty said.
The boy, whose name was not released, was flown via helicopter to a hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m.
Police were still investigating how the truck, which was parked with the keys inside about 100 feet from the pond, got into the water. Authorities did not suspect foul play.
``We have no indication of anything other than a tragic accident,″ Hagerty said.
He said investigators believe the boy was left asleep in the truck when his parents and their nephew left to go fishing at the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area Sunday morning.
