NEW DELHI, India (AP) _ The U.S. women’s field hockey team abandoned its World Cup qualifying series against India on Saturday because of mounting tension between India and Pakistan.
The Americans missed the main qualifying tournament in France in September because flights were grounded after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
``The U.S. team manager Kate Roberts called me and said the players were flying home immediately as advised by the U.S. Field Hockey Association,″ said Amrit Bose, secretary of the Indian Women’s Hockey Association.
On Friday, the U.S. State Department issued travel warnings saying Americans should not travel to India or Pakistan.
``Tensions ... have risen to serious levels, and the risk of intensified military hostilities ... cannot be ruled out,″ the warning stated.
The U.S. team was scheduled to fly home late Sunday, Bose said.
