Phila. Textile 89, Dowling 61
WEST ISELIN, N.Y. (AP) _ Herb Magee got his 500th coaching victory Wednesday night as Philadelphia Textile, behind Ed Malloy’s 28 points, beat Dowling 89-61 in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Magee, 50, became the fifth 500-game winner in NCAA Division II and the 68th overall in NCAA play. He has a 500-202 record in 25 years at his alma mater, and still ranks as Textile’s career scoring leader with 2,235 points.
Textile put the game out of reach with a 15-1 run to begin the second half, leading 53-34 with 14:07 remaining after a 3-pointer by Malloy.
Damon Roundtree had 21 points for Philadelphia Textile (14-2 overall, 9-1 NYCAC) and Randy Stover had 19. Neil Jenkins led Dowling with 19 points.
″I am not complaining, but I expected it one game ago,″ Magee said, referring to a one-point conference loss to Pace last week.
″My players tried very hard to make sure I wasn’t disappointed once again, and I’m very proud of the way they played,″ he said. ″That means more to me then winning 500. They are a great bunch of kids.″
After the victory, Textile president Dr. James P. Gallagher presented Magee with the game ball. The Ram squad then unveiled a banner in the school colors of maroon and white.
″The load is off our back,″ Roundtree said. ″There was a lot of pressure after losing to Pace. Now that it’s over, we can concentrate on our major goal - win the conference championship and make the NCAA playoffs.″
Magee has taken Philadelphia Textile to 15 NCAA tournaments and a national championship in 1969-70.
