CONCORD, N.H. (AP) _ Nearly two-thirds of the officers scheduled the day shift Wednesday at New Hampshire’s state prison failed to show up for work, state officials said.

Corrections spokesman Jeff Lyons said he did not know why 51 of 82 scheduled guards were absent. He said all but one officer reported for the evening shift.

Security was not at risk, Corrections Commissioner Phil Stanley said. The prison’s 1,365 male inmates were not locked down.

The State Employees Association chapter that represents prison employees did not organize the action, acting chapter president Gary Smith said.

A source close to the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity the protest was against Stanley’s recent decision not to promote an officer.
