Long Island woman pleads not guilty in murder-for-hire plot
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Prosecutors say a Long Island woman tried to hire a hit man to kill her ex-husband’s mother and 5-year-old daughter in Ecuador.
Elsy Rodriguez-Garcia, of Huntington Station, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to attempted murder and conspiracy.
Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini says the 25-year-old Rodriguez-Garcia reached out via WhatsApp to arrange the murders of her former husband’s 57-year-old mother and 5-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
Prosecutors say she agreed to pay $6,000 for the murders. They say she thought her ex would come back to her if his mother and daughter were out of the way.
Rodriguez-Garcia was arrested July 13.
Newsday reports that Rodriguez-Garcia’s attorney William Ferro said the murders “never could have been committed.” Ferro said payment was never offered or made for the crime.
