Wizards 2, Fusion 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Digital Takawira scored in the first half Chris Snitko posted his first career shutout as the Kansas City Wizards defeated the Miami Fusion 2-0 Sunday.
The win put the Wizards (11-14) in a tie for third place with the Colorado Rapids in the Western Conference.
Takawira scored the game winning goal in the 36th minute. He got an assist from defender Scott Vermillion, who also scored his first-ever MLS goal with only five minutes left in the game.
Preki also had two assists, giving him 10 for the season and moving him into the league’s top 15 point producers.
Wizards coach Ron Newman removed starting defender Matt McKeon and goalkeeper Mike Ammann, two of Kansas City’s top producers, from starting lineup, giving Snitko a chance to play.
The strategy paid off, as Snitko earned his first career shutout in just his second game of the season and the sixth of his MLS career. He also earned an assist on Vermillion’s 85th-minute goal.
Kansas City and Colorado are tied in the division at 29 points, with Dallas at 28 points. Kansas City holds a tiebreaker advantage over both teams in the race for the final two playoff spots.
Miami (12-13) remained five points ahead of Tampa Bay for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
