Scottsbluff auto dealership, Anderson Motors, changes hands

January 3, 2019

SCOTTSBLUFF — After 55 years of service to the community, Anderson Motors has changed ownership. It’s new owners say people will continue to recognize the same great service the dealership has offered in the community.

Local residents and new owners Scott and Brenda Wickard plan to carry on the tradition of quality service that has kept the business competitive for so long. The name Anderson Motors will remain, the couple said.

In 1963, Len Anderson and his brothers opened a car lot at Fifth Avenue and East Overland. Several other locations were to follow, but the dealership remained an active part of the business community since.

Scott Wickard said the opportunity to purchase the business came out of the blue.

“I was in a hotel in Omaha last year when Len called me to ask if I’d be interested,” he said. “It’s humbling to know he’d think of me to take over.”

Scott has been in the car business about 18 years in sales, management, financing, appraising and any task that needs to be done.

“About the biggest change I’ve seen over the years is the internet,” he said. “People like to shop online so they know what they want before they get here.”

He added that many television commercials give an unrealistic view of buying a car.

“You see people with a credit card ready to purchase a car,” he said. “There are so many different legal papers to sign there’s a lot more to the process.”

While people come to the car dealerships more informed, they still want to see in person what they’re purchasing.

“People still want to come out and touch the cars and drive them before buying anything,” Scott said. “It’s the same with me when I go to stalk the car lot. I want to know all about a car before bringing it back here. I’m very selective about that.”

He said he doesn’t plan to change a thing because he’s in the people business and the public has trusted Anderson Motors for more than a half-century.

Character is important to us,” Brenda Wickard said. “We both grew up here and know a lot of people.”

The couple are still getting the dealership organized as they officially took over ownership on Jan 2. So initially, the business will be the two of them.

“Paul Erdman was one of Len’s sales people for years and I sure wish he would have stayed,” Scott said, “but he decided to move to Arizona. I’ll definitely bring someone on but I’m in no hurry. I want to make sure I have the right person.”

Anderson Motors is located at 701 West 27th St. in Scottsbluff.
