Bus Plunges From Overpass in Rome

December 29, 2001

ROME (AP) _ A public bus plunged some 50 feet from an overpass not far from Rome’s main airport Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring many others, reports said.

The body of one man was pulled from the wreckage and at least seven other people were being rushed to the hospital, the Italian news agency ANSA said. Fire officials told the news agency AP.Biscom that at least 20 people were injured.

Eva Berto, a doctor in the emergency room of Sant’Eugenio hospital, told The Associated Press that ambulance dispatchers reported many injured victims being taken to several hospitals, including Sant’Eugenio. She said none of the victims had yet arrived.

The bus was traveling from the town of Fiumicino, near Leonardo da Vinci airport, when it broke through a guardrail and plummeted off the elevated road, landing on its side near a hotel and near the entrances and exits to the main road linking the Italian capital to the airport, reports said.
