JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ Paul McGinley of Ireland and Stephen Dodd of Wales shared the lead at 6-under 66 Thursday after the first round of the Dunhill Championship.
Dodd made four birdies and an eagle, while McGinley carded six birdies. They were one shot ahead of a group of eight players.
Another stroke back was a group of nine, including reigning U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen and Ernie Els.
Dodd picked up strokes on each of the par-5 holes and birdied the 15th, the longest par-3 hole on the course.
It was an uncharacteristically windy day over the 7,284-yard Houghton Golf Club, which made for difficult playing conditions.
``The course really didn’t test every club in the bag today,″ Els said.
Tim Clark, who won last week’s South African Open, opened Thursday with a 69.
