Accident Victim’s Body Found Four Days After Crash

February 6, 1986

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) _ The body of a 30-year-old woman was found at the site of a traffic accident four days after the crash, authorities and her family said.

The body of Sandra Crain, of Cahokia, was found Tuesday at the scene of an accident investigated Saturday, police spokesman David Jung said.

Ms. Crain’s body was found by her brother-in-law in a ditch about 100 yards from where her car had been found on Illinois Route 15, said Ms. Crain’s father, Samuel Koller of Cahokia.

″They never even looked,″ Koller said. ″If they had looked, they’d have found her.″

Trooper Herman Tolar, who investigated when Ms. Crain’s car was found on the roadside, has declined comment until the investigation is complete.

Jung said Wednesday that officials hope to issue a report by Friday.

Ms. Crain apparently was thrown from the car, said Trooper Jim Hall, an accident reconstruction specialist.

Her car was westbound when it crossed the four-lane highway and struck a guardrail on the eastbound side, Hall said. When police found the car, they thought the driver had abandoned it to call for help, he said.

St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone said an autopsy revealed Ms. Crain died from chest injuries immediately or within minutes of the accident.
