FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Brooks Koepka (KEHP’-kuh) birdied his opening hole in each of the first two rounds of the PGA Championship en route to building a record 7-stroke lead. He didn’t manage that feat in the third round, though he came close. The defending champion drove into the fairway at No. 1 and put his approach shot just under 7 feet from the pin. He missed that try and settled for a par.

NEW YORK (AP) — Didi Gregorius is projected to return to the New York Yankees next month, a faster recovery from Tommy John surgery than expected. He is scheduled to play shortstop on Monday at extended spring training in Tampa, Florida. It will be his first game action since surgery Oct. 17 to replace a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers reliever Shawn Kelley is awaiting biopsy results after having two lumps surgically removed from his throat this week. But he says he feels great and is ready to return to pitching. The 35-year-old was put on the injured list May 9, five days after he last pitched.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — James Hinchcliffe suffered no serious injuries after a crash on the second lap of his qualifying run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Track officials say the Canadian driver was checked at the infield medical center and has been cleared to drive. A year ago, Hinchcliffe was one of two drivers who didn’t make the 33-car starting grid for the Indianapolis 500. This year, 36 cars are on the entry sheet and Hinchcliffe could be in danger of missing the race again.

UNDATED (AP) — The chief operating officer of the group that owns Santa Anita Park says the California racetrack is monitoring safety conditions after the death of a horse in training. A 3-year-old horse broke down with a shoulder injury yesterday while galloping at the track and was euthanized. It’s the 24th horse fatality in racing or training at the track since Dec. 26. It’s the first horse fatality there since March 31.
