Marquette boys edge Griffith

David Schreur and Patrick Connelly each scored as the Marquette boys soccer team edged Griffith 2-1 on Wednesday. Hugo Lopez had an assist and Liam Monroe made six saves for the Blazers (10-1-2).

Andrean blanks Marquette in tennis

Sean Bardol (one singles) and the two doubles team of Colin Thompson and Riggs Bardol dropped three-set matches in Marquette’s 5-0 boys tennis loss to Andrean on Wednesday. Bardol fell 7-5, 2-6, 10-5, while Clement and Sabben lost 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. Cormack Bardol and Reagan Hendricks were beaten in straight sets at two and three singles, respectively, likewise Aidan McDonnell and Brendan Mack at one doubles.

Salyer scores in Blazers loss

Claire Salyer scored on a penalty kick for Marquette but Griffith ended the Blazers’ three-game winning streak in girls soccer Wednesday with a 5-1 decision.

Blazers Dig Pink

Marquette volleyball will hold its Dig Pink Night on Oct. 3 when the Blazers host Kouts. The JV match is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity match to follow.

The Dig Pink initiative is hosted in conjunction with the Side-Out Foundation. Funds raised for Side-Out go toward a clinical trial specifically for patients with stage 4 breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease and the least funded of research. Fans are encouraged to wear pink apparel on the 6th.

The Blazers have set a goal of $1,000. Donations may be made on Marquette’s Dig Pink site (https://giving.side-out.org/campaigns/14554#/) or in person on Oct. 6.

Friday Night Football Tour at La Porte

Friday’s game at La Porte against Merrillville will be spotlighted as part of the Indianapolis Colts Friday Night Football Tour. Fans can visit the tour area before the game for a chance to win Colts tickets, meet Colts cheerleaders and receive a Friday Night Football Tour rally towel while supplies last. The festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Slicers girls, boys soccer schedule changes Saturday

La Porte’s girls soccer home match on Saturday versus South Bend Clay will begin at 9 a.m. and will be varsity only. The Slicers boys soccer home match against Mishawaka will follow with the varsity playing at about 11 a.m., followed by one half of a JV match.

Glenn boys soccer falls on PKs

John Glenn’s boys soccer team lost on penalty kicks, 4-1, to visiting Bremen on Tuesday. The match was tied 1-1 after 80 minutes, plus an additional 14 in extra time. The Falcons defense played strong. A mistake between the Lions keeper and central defender led Glenn’s Justin Henry to win the ball, take a touch around the scramble, and shoot the ball into the empty net. Falcons goalie Joey Parker earned 15 saves.

K of C Soccer Challenge

The Knights of Columbus of St. Michael Council in La Porte will hold its annual Soccer Challenge at the soccer field at Kesling Middle School on Saturday. The event is open for boys and girls ages 9-14. Registration will take place from 3:30-4 p.m. with the competition running from 4-5:30. Birth certificates are required.

Pumpkin Festival 3-on-3 basketball tourney

The annual Pumpkin Festival 3-on-3 basketball tourney will be at Westville High School on Sept. 30. It will have girls and boys divisions from 4th grade up to adult divisions. This will be double elimination and the entry fee is $75. Registration will begin around 7:30 a.m. with games around 8:15 a.m. Trophies will be given to first-place winners and T-shirts will be given to all participants.
