Bird-Biting Teacher Returns to Job
AVON, Ind. (AP) _ The Avon High School teacher who was suspended for two weeks after he admitted to biting the head off a live sparrow in front of the wrestling team has returned to school.
Aron Bright, 31, a history and geography teacher and wrestling coach, received a warm welcome Tuesday from colleagues and students, who greeted him with a signed petition demanding that he not be fired for the act.
Bright admitted to biting the head off the sparrow on Dec. 28 at his parents’ home in Centerville. The act occurred while he and some assistant coaches, plus 15 varsity wrestlers, were attending a two-day meet in Connersville.
Animal rights activists and some Avon parents groups are demanding that he be fired. They are expected to present their petition to the school board this month.
``In hindsight, I regret doing it,″ Bright said. ``I apologize to this community for the black eye that I put on it. I apologize to my colleagues for portraying them in a negative light.″
