Puerto Rico 85, Uruguay 72

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Jose Ortiz scored 18 points and Mario Morales added 16 as Puerto Rico defeated Uruguay 85-72 Saturday in men’s basketball at the Pan American Games.

Uruguay, 1-3, will face the United States, 4-0, in Sunday’s quarterfinals.

Puerto Rico, 3-1, led 42-34 at halftime and took its largest lead of the game at 57-43 with 11:07 to play on two free throws by Morales.

Uruguay, however, stayed within striking distance, cutting the lead to 65-59 with 5:28 to play. Federico Lopez hit a 3-pointer for Puerto Rico and then fed Angel Cruz for a layup to put the game away.

Cruz finished with 12 points for Puerto Rico, one more than Lopez.

Luis Pierri led Uruguay with 22 points, while Herbert Nunez added 17.

Morales was ejected from the game with 24 seconds to play for throwing a punch at Carlos Peinado who had fouled him. Both benches emptied but no other punches were exchanged.
