McCown flips commitment to Marshall
CHARLESTON — George Washington High School junior Brianna McCown committed to continue her softball career at Marshall University on Wednesday, flipping on a verbal commitment she’d made to Eastern Kentucky University in January.
McCown was a Class AAA all-state first team selection in her freshman and sophomore seasons as the Patriots made back-to-back runs to the state tournament. She was 15-3 with a 1.07 ERA and 153 strikeouts a year ago while batting .378 with four home runs and 35 RBIs out of the cleanup spot.
She became the second area softball player to flip to Marshall in recent months, with Hurricane High School’s Caiti Mathes announcing in June she had committed to the Thundering Herd after originally giving a verbal to Virginia Tech. Mathes was a Class AAA all-state first team pick in 2016 and 2018 and a second-team pick in 2017. The senior also was named Kanawha Valley Player of the Year last season after hitting .493 with 14 home runs and 54 RBIs from her shortstop position.
The current Thundering Herd roster boasts six players from West Virginia, including sophomore Katie Adams, a former Hurricane player who was named as the state player of the year in 2016 and 2017.
