Two drivers were injured in a serious accident that marred
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Two drivers were injured in a serious accident that marred the Komfort Koach 200 subcompact race Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
Joe Young of Richmond, Va., and Duell Sturgill of Staffordsville, Ky., were hurt in a six-car tangle on lap 36 of the 80-lap event.
Both were taken to nearby Halifax Medical Center. No information was immediately available on their conditions, although NASCAR officials said Sturgill had apparently suffered fractures to both legs.
Larry Caudill, who started from the pole after Mike Swaim’s record qualifying lap was disqualified because of a technical violation, won the event. Except for brief periods following pit stops, he kept his Pontiac Sunbird out front from lap 49 to the end.
Caudill beat second-place Danny McClain to the finish line by 8.58 seconds. The winner, who collected $8,950 for the victory, averaged 110.092 mph.
Ken Auman was third, followed by Jim Higgs and Jesse Samples Jr.
Swaim, who had won this race three straight years and finished third the previous two tries, started 26th Friday and wound up ninth, three laps off the pace.
In all, there were six caution flags for a total of 31 laps.
