Gasquet opens against Kyrgios in Davis Cup
PARIS (AP) — Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Lleyton Hewitt will meet in the second singles of the France-Australia Davis Cup tie on Friday, after Richard Gasquet opens against Nick Kyrgios.
“Lleyton is a legend,” said Tsonga, who leads the two-time former Grand Slam champion 3-0 in their head-to-heads. “We were adolescents during his glory era and we dreamed of becoming professionals, so he made an impression on us with his determination and will to win. He hasn’t changed.”
Gasquet, ranked ninth in the world, will be a heavy favorite against a player ranked 162nd.
Nevertheless, Gasquet remains wary of facing the 18-year-old Kyrgios for the first time.
“He’s one of the most talented players we’ve seen for a long time,” Gasquet said. “It’s down to me to win the first point and get the team off to a good start. I’m the favorite, but he’s got nothing to lose.”
Gael Monfils will play alongside doubles specialist Julien Benneteau when they play Hewitt and Chris Guccione on Saturday. Gasquet then plays Hewitt and Tsonga takes on Kyrgios in Sunday’s reverse singles.
The winner of the tie on indoor clay will face either Spain or Germany in the quarterfinals in April.
