SOUND TIGERS Bellows, Smith win shootout for Sound Tigers

November 17, 2018

They traded third-period goals a man up. They traded big saves in overtime. They traded three shootout chances.

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers finally got the edge on the Laval Rocket in the fourth round of the shootout.

Bridgeport goalie Jeremy Smith stopped Brett Kulak on a backhander, and Kieffer Bellows snapped a shot under Laval goalie Charlie Lindgren’s glove to give Bridgeport a 2-1 win Friday at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec.

Bridgeport has won six out of seven, with an overtime loss in the other game Wednesday in Hartford.

Like Wednesday, the Sound Tigers surrendered a late goal: a power-play goal in the last five minutes to the Wolf Pack, an extra-attacker goal in the last minute to Laval on Friday. Jake Evans’ one-timer from the top of the left circle tied it at 1.

Smith finished with 26 saves. He’d made a few big saves, including one on Lukas Vejdemo on a short-handed two-on-one moments after Bridgeport took a lead.

That came on a five-on-three. The Rocket’s Daniel Audette was called for a high-sticking minor, apparently getting his stick up on Sebastian Aho. Michael Chaput was sent off for cross-checking Bellows into the boards 49 seconds later.

Josh Ho-Sang’s pass from the left side to the front of the net caromed off Tanner Fritz’s left skate into the slot. Devon Toews stepped up and fired a shot over Lindgren’s glove to end over 47 minutes of scoreless hockey.

Each of the Sound Tigers’ four lines had a tweak from recent versions after the New York Islanders called up Michael Dal Colle and Stephen Gionta. Bellows slid into Dal Colle’s spot with Connor Jones and Ho-Sang.

Bridgeport gets veteran Steve Bernier back from a two-game AHL suspension on Saturday night in Belleville, Ontario.
