Helping hands sought for mural’s renewal in Santa Fe

October 1, 2018

For the past year, artist Carlos Cervantes, 64, has been working to restore a mural he painted in 1994 in what is now known as Louis Montaño Park across Alto Street from the old Santa Fe Boys & Girls Clubs building.

Cervantes lives near the park. Several weeks ago, a group called Art for Change began organizing “community painting days” on Sunday afternoons to assist with the project.

Art for Change organizer Moira Garcia said last week that about 50 people have helped with the restoration. Those with any level of skill in painting are encouraged to participate, Garcia said.

On Sunday, there will be Aztec dancers at the park during the project. The hours of the painting sessions are from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The organizers also are accepting tax-deductible donations for paint through the nonprofit Community Learning Network. Learn more at communitylearningnetwork.org/mural-restoration.html.
