Eugene Russell Schaafsma, 90, of St. Anne, passed away Sunday (Dec. 30, 2018) in Raleigh, N.C. He died of congestive heart failure.
He was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Wichert, the son of Arthur Bert “AB” and Cornelia Koster Schaafsma. Eugene married Ramona Barney on Sept. 30, 1949, in Wichert.
Surviving are his wife, Mona; children, Julie (Chris) Miller, Gerry (Kathy) Schaafsma, Jim (Jennifer) Schaafsma and Paul Schaafsma. He was a fun-loving grandfather to his grandchildren, Karin (Joshua Gross) Miller, Sarah (Jeff) Dunifon, Tyler Schaafsma, Graham Schaafsma, Genna Schaafsma, Jake Schaafsma, Emma (Andrew) Schoenbeck, Hannah Schaafsma, Ryan Schaafsma and Ava Schaafsma. He also has many surviving nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in his death were his parents; three sisters, Johanna (Lionel) Westerhoff, Ida (Robert “Bud”) Slingerland and Evelyn (John) Hoekstra; brother, Arthur F. (Cora) Schaafsma; and a grandson, Reed Schaafsma.
Eugene was a retired farmer who had a second job as an inventory specialist at Armour Pharmaceuticals for 32 years. Eugene cherished his family and his many vacation trips. He especially enjoyed planning the trips and had traveled to all 50 United States and many foreign countries. He shared his quiet spirit and a keen sense of humor with many during the years. Eugene enabled all four of his children to graduate from college. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan who was happy to see them win the World Series in 2016.
He graduated from St. Anne Community High School and was a member of Wichert Reformed Church.
Eugene was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served in El Paso, Texas, from 1954 to 1955.
A private memorial service was held at Renaissance Funeral Home in Raleigh. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Wichert.
