RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say police shot a 74-year-old man in southern Washington state after he pointed a shotgun at officers.

The Tri-City Herald reports Michael Miller had called 911 Sunday morning, telling a dispatcher that he had a shotgun and was near a church in north Richland.

According to police reports, Richland officers found Miller and tried to talk with him, but he fired his shotgun into the air.

Police say Miller refused officers’ orders, and he pointed his shotgun, resulting in an officer shooting him.

Miller was taken to a hospital. His condition wasn’t immediately known.

The Tri-City Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting.

The officer who shot Miller has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard police policy in shootings.
